smart fortwo awarded environmental certificate
The Öko-Trend institute for environmental research certifies a high level of
environmental friendliness for the smart fortwo and has awarded it the
environmental certificate for cars.
The petrol version with 45 kW (61 bhp) has received the award for more reasons
than just its low fuel consumption as the certificate is based on an extensive
assessment of a car's environmental compatibility.
As well as fuel consumption, noise and pollutant emissions, ecological criteria
such as details of the manufacturer's production, procurement, logistics,
recycling and environmental management are included in the assessment.
These things have always been important to smart: protection of the environment
was and continues to be an integral part of all the company's fields of
activity.
This does not only apply to the production facility in Hambach, France - it
also applies to the smart fortwo itself: from the development and production of
the vehicle to its operational period and later recycling.
Low-consumption diesel version
The diesel version of the smart fortwo is just as environmentally friendly as
the petrol version. The smart fortwo cdi consumes just 3.8 litres of fuel per
100 kilometres under standard conditions.
With more than 140,000 models sold to date, the smart fortwo cdi is the most
successful "three litre" car worldwide. Since this year the diesel version has
been available with a diesel particle filter (open system), and this can be
retrofitted on older models.
It gets even better
The new smart fortwo that will be launched on the market in the spring of 2007
will also be a true smart fortwo and therefore just as environmentally friendly
- or to be more precise: even more environmentally friendly.
The successor model will not only adopt the main features of the current smart
fortwo, it will further improve them. You could say that the new smart fortwo
can do everything that the current fortwo can do - but better.
The Öko-Trend environmental certificate for cars is a further development of
the Öko-Trend annual car environmental ranking that has been compiled since
1997. The smart fortwo is one of the first vehicles to receive this
certificate.
